Writing A Technical Brief That Gets You An Accurate Estimate

Open with the problem you are solving, not your preferred technology. What kind of user will use the system, how many times a day, and how is the job done today? A vendor who knows what you are trying to achieve can propose a cheaper route to it; one who only sees the requirements as given can only price the list as written.



Define what is included as concrete flows: what the user does and what the system does in response. Equally important, software development lifecycle state explicitly what the first release deliberately excludes. An explicit exclusion list saves more argument at delivery time than almost anything else in the document. Mark too which parts are firm and which are still open — honest teams price those differently, and concealing the open questions helps no one.



Set out your constraints.
